Guidelines for Breaking Words up into Syllables

Each syllable must have a vowel:  a e i o u y

A vowel can be a syllable by itself but a consonant cannot.

Example:  a-like

We usually break up double consonants:  ll, mm, nn, pp, …

Example.:  stop-ping

We usually keep consonant blends together:  sh, ch, st, sch, th, tr, nt, wr, ng, cl, bl…

Example:  un-stop-pa-ble, pre-school

Take off prefixes and suffixes:  in, un, pre, ly, ness, non, able…

Example:  un-hap-pi-ness

Keep vowel blends together:  vail,   pre-vail,   com-pan-ion,   plea-sure,  mur-der-ous

Look for base words (root words) inside long words:

Examples:  bloodthirsty= blood + thir-sty,   deliberately= de-lib-er-ate + ly

momentary= mo-ment + ary
