Before reading

Review:   What was happening in the story the last time you read?  Look back and reread a few sentences to refresh your memory if necessary.

Predict:  What do you think might happen next?

During reading

If you get stumped by a word, break it up into syllables, and sound out each syllable.

When you come across unfamiliar vocabulary words, use the context of the story to make an educated guess at what the word means, and then either ask an adult what the word means (give them the context) or look up the word in a dictionary.  Make a flash card for each new word with the word on the front and the meaning on the back.  Also include an example of how the word is used in a sentence.

When you have read a good chunk of story, stop and ask your self one or two important questions.  Use the following question words.  Why is usually the most important question to ask.

Why

How

Where

Who

What

Which

After reading

Summarize what happened.  You don't need every detail, just the important events.

Predict what might happen next.

Review the new vocabulary words you found and their meanings.
